Also I think I'm kind of developing a teacher-crush on Nick Parlante, the instructor for the online Computer Science 101 course I'm taking. It wasn't until I signed up for Stanford's other free offerings, and saw the caliber of what other teachers were putting out there, that I realized what a boss Parlante was.

Lazy weekend

Unusually quiet weekend - or at least a weekend free of regularly scheduled social interaction. Both games were off because of absenteeism, and movie night was off the docket for the same reason. Friday night I went running and then just studied JS. Saturday night, ranai and I went to see The Avengers again. (Well, again for me.) That movie is pretty awesome; I think it stops a few meters shy of being actually great, but things that are good about it, are just so fucking good.

And in the morning, I'd gone to the park with mordicai, pravda and wee bairn Olivia, whom I think is warming up to me, and vice versa. There was such a long stretch, from like 1982 (when Christine was born) until 1990 or so (when Matthew turned three) where I was kind of always on deck for taking care of small children? And I guess Siobhan was only 5 when Chris was born, so I'd say until I was 15, there were a lot of babies and kids in my life. Four years later, Roscoe became part of my life and I think refocused my caretaking energies away from the young of the species to a certain extent. And now? I have to admit, babies and children kinda make me anxious. I just haven't been around one in a while and I guess it's weird how surprised I am that it's a knack you might just ... lose somehow.

Today: brunch with elladorian at Palo Santo. Hard to pass up soft shell crabs on a nice spring day like today. Afterwards: studied, somewhat frustratingly, at an infernal cafe on 5th Ave. Next to Beauty Bar, whatever that place is called now. It was a review of stuff I should have known better, and pushing forward into some stuff that should have come easily, but didn't. Like, why can't I make that function-call from one frame to its parent frame work without erasing the entire frame, whyyyy. Still. It's a fun feeling to be so ridiculously pleased with myself for every little victory (and they are all little). My skills are still infantile in scope, but sometimes I just look around myself, even while alone, thinking, 'Isn't there anyone around to see me understanding how var tableRows = top.frameTop.frmB.document.getElementsByTagName("tr"); works? Can someone just get in here to see this?' It's not an unfamiliar sensation; learning Greek was like that too. ("Hey everyone, watch me conjugate these irregular verbs!")

Maybe the most irritating thing of studying JavaScript is that it's so useless on its own. I attained a reasonable neophyte competence in JS, but can't do a heck of a lot with it because I'm still pretty terrible at HTML and CSS. And now my textbooks are introducing techniques of DOM manipulation, without which, HTML and CSS are kinda bunk also. Individually, they're not too threatening, but the holistics of their interaction together is still pretty opaque to me.

Teaching myself how to code is still the most rewarding and fun thing in my life right now. Also running. I've got a full month behind me now of being back on the wagon, or, er, on the road I guess. My distances and times are coming along nicely, and I'm really optimistic about getting up to a half marathon distance by the end of the summer. Also I've been making a special effort to only run in Prospect Park during daylight hours, rather than around Gowanus in the middle of the night. It improves the experience greatly, let me tell you. All around I'm in a better place than I was. It's very very different - sometimes I get up in the morning and have a hard time recognizing myself - but better I think.

Speaking of which, crap, I have to go to bed so I can get up for work in the morning, and give my muscles enough time to rest. Blarg.

Friday: went to listen to a lecture by Lee Maschmeyer at Lore, where Jenny works. mordicai is right in that I think they're trying to spin up a kind of salon thing in their office. It was fine. I think the speaker's background and baggage (he's a designer by trade, and SVA professor) led him to make some ultimately superficial connections between a couple of things, which you necessarily will wind up doing when you draw a line from Andre Breton to John Cage to the Whole Earth Catalog to the internet. He spoke eloquently of art, and I found myself wanting him to go on more about his childhood fixation on Brutalist architecture (who doesn't love Brutalist architecture?), but in a lot of other areas, he prefaced his comments with "Well, I'm not an expert in this, so forgive me if I mangle the idea a bit". Like, yeah, John Cage did do a lot of experiments in removing an authorial presence from composing music, but not as in, sharing or distribution of authorship (the closest parallel there would be improvisational jazz), more like composition by d6. Which he wasn't the only (or even the first) person to do anyway. And the internet isn't based on randomized authorship. I guess spambots are kinda like that? Kinda. They're nonhuman, but still pretty rules-based.

Maybe something freer would be more appropriate here, but damn I love European Echoes so much.

Saturday morning I had some people over that I (mostly) used to work with to roll up 2nd edition AD&D characters for a game I'm gonna DM. It went really well, I think! I made brunch - mostly just my normal cheeses and fruits, but also sandwiches of guacamole, tomato, zucchini, clover sprouts, romaine and queso fresco on brioche and pretzel rolls. I didn't get to eat any of the sandwiches, but I imagine they were fabulous. The party - a fighter, druid, thief, paladin, psionicist and wild mage. Two characters have only one single hit point, and no cleric. Second edition: brutal as hell. Things'll be interesting at least. Right now I'm trying to find a good AD&D module to adapt before Saturday when we meet again, and in reading up on some online, thinking I might just go whole hog and give the players a deeply Gygaxian experience, and stick close to the old classics, the standards, the "Melancholy Babys" of the genre. For their benefit and my own. I've only really experienced the game's roots second-hand, through the admirers and imitators of the game's early days. We'll see. It may just be too alien for me to run effectively.

While I was making the guacamole, I accidentally rubbed a little serrano chile into my eye, and it troubled me the rest of the day.

Saturday night was movie night at Edbury's workplace, with Kacie curating this time out. She picked The Muppet Movie - the original, not the recent Jason Segel one, whatever that's called. It was really, really good. I'd remembered it being good, but not that good. A rare, Avatar-like entertainment that's rewarding for adults, and smart and funny for children, and doesn't underestimate or pander to either. It's also deeply, hilariously reflexive and metatextual in a way that made everyone keep bringing up Inception - not entirely unwarranted. Next we watched Twins, which was no good, but no good on the right side of the fence for me, and I didn't mind watching it at all. I think I saw it in the theater the first time around. On the way out, Kacie told me the movie I'd curated a couple weeks ago - Miracle Mile - had been incredibly depressing. I was waiting for a "but ... " to come after that, and it never did. That's all she wanted to tell me. I think I may try for something lighter the next time out. I've fantasy-curated so many double features in my head already.

Sunday - whoa, I'm getting sleepy here - Sunday was the character generation session for Edbury's Alpha Omega game, which, like Tom's zombie game, features us playing future posthuman versions of ourselves. Everyone keeps talking about how depressing the game is, that there was an apocalypse and everyone we love died hundreds of years ago ... but I'm pretty sure this character will be my happiest one yet. How awesome would it be to transcend death and the ages and wake up in the future? I'm pretty sure I'd only be happy about that. Everyone wants to plan a heist or something with their characters? I'm pretty sure I'm going to be using all my time to try to get everyone to catch up on 200 years of television with me.

After that I sat in Prospect Park by the boathouse working on my novel until it got too cold to sit outside. Resolved a minor quandry - a very minor one, but that's one less thing on my to-do list.

Monday was Cabin in the Woods with Maggie, which I've reviewed already. Today: weird day at work and in life. I'm starting to burn out on always being the bearer of bad news for everyone. I hang on to the weekend - this particular one and the general concept. I had such a great, rewarding, relaxing weekend with all my friends, and with the solitude I had, that I reflected to myself several times that I couldn't even imagine what stress or not having fun might be like. So yeah, more weekends like the last few, please.
